Unless I'm mistaken, the iPhone 4S had the very neat feature of using the same inner hardware inside every model. The carrier you bought it from would lock it, but if you could get it unlocked it could be used on other networks because it had all the same frequencies.

That changed with the iPhone 5 because of the LTE addition. So what I'd like to know from others is whether chips are made now that would allow a unified phone to be sold. I have a ton of relatives using iPhones, so I could foresee one of them getting my old phone in a couple of years. I plan on trading this one in to get about $120 off my new one, but I'd like to have the option at least.
