If I pick up a XDR display and Apple soon released micro-LED is my display now obsolete or is there also negatives to micro-led?

It depends on what you want to do with the XDR. Both XDR and micro-LED use an array of LEDs for the backlight and LCD for the image. They can use those LEDS to selectively brighten or darken areas of the screen. Neither system has enough LEDs for each LCD pixel so a given LED will light up a group of LCD pixels. The difference between XDR and micro-LED would be in the size and number of those LEDs. Supposedly, when micro-LEDs are released they will have finer “resolution” of the backlight. Micro-LED is essentially just a higher resolution version of what is on the XDR now. This may or may not matter to you.

One thing to keep in mind is that this has potential to produce “bloom” around the pixels in some scenarios. I have not seen an XDR and don’t have first hand experience to tell you if that is noticeable or not. It is a monitor that is produced and sold to high end professionals with very exacting needs so I doubt that it is a significant problem for most cases. If you listen to the Accidental Tech Podcast, John Siracusa has one and has recently said that it is nearly impossible to see that bloom in normal circumstances.

If you have a need for such a large monitor with that high a resolution and that tight of color control and if you have a big budget, then the XDR may be what you need. There are no indications that Apple plans to bring out micro-LED displays in the near term at that size. Speculation has focused on iPad and laptop sized displays.

If you don’t have the really specific needs that XDR addresses, you might be better off saving some money and getting either an 27” 5K monitor or a 32” 4K and save your money for something else in the further out future.
