Any data service south of LAX on 405?

I was driving back from Huntington Beach today along the 405 and had 4 bars of service, and zero data service for well over 30 miles. For anyone who lives in this area, is this the norm? what a joke. Of course, it was the first time i needed to use my GPS and it wasn't available....really annoying.
