Well, crap. That was going to be my xmas present. Too early to speculate as to potential changes in the next full sized version?

I wouldn't rule it out. If anything it will probably be minor. Lightning connector and fix whatever heat/charging issues there are.

Wouldn't switching to a lightning connector require a major redesign of the internal components?

I don't see any updates happening, as already said, until March. We dont know anything for 100%, but there are some highly probable/educated guesses we can make on what to expect:
A6 chip
Lightening Connector
4G
Thinner/Lighter (most likely due to better display technology)

That only makes sense if it's something they always do, which I don't believe it is. Besides, I'd think it is getting too close to their normal "new and improved" iPad release now.

The iPad 2 refresh was in it's 2nd year after the iPad 3 was released. I doubt we'll see an iPad 3 refresh until the iPad 4 is out.
