Capt. Phil Harris, one of the signature personalities that made the reality series "The Deadliest Catch" such a gigantic breakout hit for the Discovery Channel, died Tuesday (February 9) at the age of 53. Harris died of complications from a stroke he suffered on January 29.

Last Friday, while offloading his vessel, the Cornelia Marie, in St. Paul Island, Alaska, Capt. Phil Harris was found unconcious in his state room after suffering a stroke. He was medivacked to Anchorage where he underwent a 12-hour surgery and was placed in a medically-induced coma to reduce brain swelling.

At least his family was with him.

Will miss him, but he smoked like a chimney. I thought after his leg blood clot a few years back he would try to live healthier.

RIP

Captain Phil was my favorite. He was just great, handsome, tough, loved his boys, awesome humor. I'm saddened by this news, really. :(

I met Josh in NY last summer and he is polite and handsome, I hope all the messages all over the internet are helping the brothers grieve.

I actually watched this show a bit when I was working out west last year, it was always on when I got home.

Considering how many shows centered on his bad health I guess it's not terribly surprising (but still a tragedy).

I continue to be amazed at how successful that show is. Reality TV is still the rage. I hate to look at this with a jaundiced eye, but I suspect this will be a boost for ratings.

Yeah, I'm a big fan and was sad to see him pass away. Sadly given his smoking and lifestyle it did not come as a complete shock however.

I think it was last season he was hospitalized with a blood clot in his lung, or something like that. He would sneak out of the hospital and smoke a cigarette or two.

Thumbing his nose at the Reaper until the very end. We'll miss you, Captain Phil.

Yeah and the last two seasons he was looking very ragged, working hard and presumably playing hard took a toll on his body.

I saw the shows where he'd be lighting up a cancer stick. Its too bad

I also heard this news and was very sad. He abused his body though:( It's too bad, he was a great guy, and I'm sure his crew is lost right now.
