There aren't many uses for DOS-like OSes anymore, I'll admit... but FreeDOS works GREAT in a virtual machine. Installation got a bit confused and couldn't find the boot disk after the first reboot, but a manual shutdown / reboot cleared that up. I'd think the primary use case for FreeDOS is running programs that DOSBox (and its frontends) can't handle... but I have yet to find such a program.
 
I've toyed with it in the past, maybe I'll pick it back up.

Dos boot usb stick for those times you need to update firmware or at least that is the only thing I have used in for in these past few decades although it was on floppy early on for that usage..
