Was considering getting the BaoFeng UV-5REbut heard I should get a SDR radio so I can use it with the computer.

What say you?

Also these radios are always for local distances. Are there any that can transmit overseas and fit in a backpack? Or at least a radio that can transmit half way across Canada/USA. Do you have to be in the military to have such expensive radios or just have a license?

Hi Patent10021! I'm new to the forums here - and a relatively new amateur radio operator. Whatever did you decide on between SDR and the UV-5R?

I JUST decided on going with the UV-5R and Easy Digi interface ustilizing a waterfall app to do digital modes.

Would be interested to hear if you have any experience with this?
