Alright, here are the specs:

iPhone 3GS
iOS 4.3.5 (8L1)
BB 05.16.02

I use Windows.

I've been searching a great deal and have basically came to the conclusion that it's basically impossible to jailbreak and unlock my phone.

I found one thread here about it but it's old (and extremely complicated ) and it says I have to install the iPad BB therefore loosing GPS signal (I'd prefer not to). Also it says you can't go back to a normal iphone BB once you do this  (again something I'm not too excited about).

I guess my hope is that in the meantime the community has found an easier way of doing this without loosing anything. If so can someone help me?

Thanks!

What you read is correct.
Only option would be the ipad bb and that as you know comes with many side effects.
If you dont want to get into it and I dont blame you wait till after 5.0 is out in case there's more options available or if there's a possibility of a baseband downgrade tool in the future.

That seems like a possibility... and waiting for the 5.0 shouldn't take too long right? Isn't it supposed to come out in a couple of months?

Personly I think since there are more options to buy a factory unlocked phone. And IPhone's being sold on more carriers you will see less unlocking but jailbreaking Ahh the force is strong.

I agree.
Now that there is officially unlocked off contract iphones sold in the US it makes it less of a priority. And also the unlocks are way harder to come by and Apple is becoming more and more secure as of late.

You could use gevey sim with a micro sim adapter to unlock your phone. However, you need to be creative in order to place and hold two pieces - gevey sim adapter and micro sim together.

Good Luck!

I don't believe it's compatible on the hardware side.

Also, getting all of that sandwiched in there would be horrible.
