I’ve been playing “hide and seek” with my kid and we hide the AirTag from each other and find it…she absolutely loves it.

But, I notice it always connects but I rarely get the arrow to point to where it’s at. Here’s a few images of what I see before I find it.

Mine does the same. I would have thought if it was connected it should be able to point you in the right direction.

Yeah, luckily it connects and beeps...but the arrow is hit or miss sometimes.
 
I have yet to get the arrow to actually work on mine. most of the time I cant even get the circular array of dots like in the pictures above. usually it just says can not find.
 
If you hide or lose your AIRTAGS in a high traffic (iphone) area you will get an arrow quicker
It appears that if your iPhone is the only one nearby it takes longer
