Any idea why my emails are blacked out?

2011 Mini running 10.13.6

I recently started using the Mac OS email client on my Mini that I use as a home theatre PC plugged into my Samsung TV.

For some reason a lot of my emails are completely black out (see attached pictures).

It happens both when I double click on an email to open it in an external window, and also when the email is still in the main window with everything else.

It only happens on email chains with multiple messages, but not on single email without responses.

Any suggestions?
