From what I read Matter did go in 16.1, meaning it wasn’t pulled?

Are any of you seeing Matter devices in Settings or the Home app?
If so, I’m curious what devices you see listed.

Many thanks!

From my understanding, the Home app is not displaying explicitly Matter accessories in the app. It is more of a backend update of HomeKit to support the new protocol. But I may be wrong

Can someone walk me through a real world example of how this will work and/or make a difference? I have a Ring camera/alarm system, Echo devices, Eccobee thermostat.

Someone please correct me if I have this wrong.

My understanding is that Matter devices that are not currently compatible with HomeKit would still display in the Home app and offer similar functionality as current HomeKit devices. I’m hoping someday we’d see a Dyson fan in the Home app for example. So instead of using every device‘s app they could all be controlled in Home.

Cameras aren’t supported in the Matter standard (yet). Neither are speakers. Your Ecobee thermostat is already HomeKit compatible so you’ll see no change on the iPhone/Home app side.

What you will see is your Echo devices being able to control your Ecobee, both of which will become Matter compatible with a firmware upgrade. While its speaker cant be controlled by Matter, Echo devices and Alexa will be Matter controllers.

In the future when you buy any smart home device, it’ll be far easier to find one that works with your iPhone and Home app. You won’t be limited by “Homekit compatible” stickers. The universe or devices compatible with iOS has just expanded enormously. For those of us who miss Nest thermostats, the newest one and all future Nest devices will work with Matter, finally bringing it into iOS, Siri and the Home app without any workarounds.
