So a while ago I piled in posting about MagSafe overheating but I couldn’t pinpoint the cause. Anyway I began to realize when I stream video and charge with MagSafe that’s when the phone gets super super hot to the point it stops charging. This happened last night I left the phone charging MagSafe while streaming cbs all access app playing Young Sheldon (😂). I woke up and look at my phone and it stopped charging and got super hot. I turned off the streaming and played music instead and it resumed charging again presuming when it cooled down but I don’t know when it started charging as I went back to sleep.

Any experience this issue? I returned my first MagSafe and got a replacement so this is the second one with the same issue.

Side note: apple is rumored to be released a battery pack but I read they are experiencing issues with the software indicating it’s overheating so I wonder if this is similar issue. Maybe they need to pull back watts earlier to prevent this issue maybe only charge to 7.5w after hitting a certain percentage.

Just a theory, but MagSafe pucks are known to raise heat when charging. Not to mention 12 mini also heats up quite easily due to smaller body. Even when charging with 18W wired charger, my mini is noticeably warmer, very. I think your MagSafe charger is normal, and you shouldn’t be doing anything heavy with your phone while charging with it (streaming videos, playing games, etc.)

This doesn't surprise me and I'm sure its normal. We know the mini is already limited to 12W instead of 15W through magsafe and it is probably due to the greater potential of overheating.

Honestly you shouldn't stream/game or heavy phone usage when using MagSafe.... they get hot enough just sitting alone. One of the main reasons I prefer lightning port normal charge vs MagSafe. Plus what exactly is the "benefit" of MagSafe? It's still a cable attached to phone.... guess I just don't understand.

The "benefit" is that you can use your phone while charging for when apple introduce a portless iPhone. If its just speed you want and you have a phone with a port, then obviously the 20w charger makes a lot more sense; and its cheaper.

Odd ... I have a 24W Aukey GaN USB-C charger that I use with my 12 mini and it never gets warm (overnight mostly or during the day). Yes with overnight I plug in it and use it while it charges from 7, 10, 20% up to 60% before I crash out.

Full day I’ve owned my Satechi 3-in-1 Qi charging accessory, which charges the iPhone’s at 7.5W not the 12W that MagSafe will do with the 12 Mini and I thought it got really warm. Then realized it was the exhaust from my EliteBook just hands-width away that was causing the heat.

Any possibility the mini isn’t taking full 20W from the Aukey maybe?
My 10W Apple charger also gives slight warm. Hence I only use 5W charger.

My only experience with MagSafe charging the 12 Mini was using the Anker Nano "i8 W" brick along with the Anker PowerWave MagSafe charging head. Charging through a clear Torras case. No issues with heating. Only very slightly warm to the touch. Typical charging rate is 1.1% per minute.

I first purchased a mini (returned it after a week and went with the 12 instead) and a MagSafe charger and yes I did notice that the thing got ridiculously hot when charging the phone while using it. I since read someplace that one should not charge using those things and use the phone at the same time.
I concluded that a regular (I use a Samsung) wireless charger made more sense than spending the money on the MagSafe to have my phone heat up like that. With the Samsung charger I also get the benefit of having a light on the charger which tells me if the phone is completely charged or not. Something that the MagSafe does not have.
