Hello to everyone

I gave my XS max to my father as he finally decided to dumb his dumbphone ...

So I am looking to buy a new vs used pro iphone asap :

I usually keep my phones for 2,5 - 3 years and then I resell them:

Used iphone 14 pro (with a fresh official battery replacement) at 530 euro(590 usd)

or

New 16 pro at 900 euro (1000 usd)

Obiously the 16 pro is a better phone but which one is a better deal ? its a 370 euro (410 usd) difference

Hello ,
Does the design of the 17 pro suit you? If yes wait
If urgent 16 pro
it does but right now Im without a phone (using an old iphone 6) so I have to buy something within the next days.

On top of that the iphone 17 pro will be available in mid october (so 5 months from now) and probably will cost more.

900 is already a stretch for me...had a cap at 700 max.. but thinking I could resell it for more in couple of years compared to 14 pro..maybe I will lose 100 euro more.... In couple of years 14 pro will be at 250-300 and 16 pro at 550-600

Perhaps cars are a good analogy nowadays. You will save most buying an old, used model that is serviceable and driving it for a few years, then trade it and buy another old, used model, and repeat. The caveat is you are not interested in the latest and greatest. It's just a car, or it's just a phone.

If I were in those shoes, I would minimize risk, as @TechRunner comments. I would also buy a model that is recent enough that it will continue to get software updates during the time you will be using it.

What about a middle ground? How much would a 15 Pro cost? And if your carrier is like most US carriers, you can pick up the 'older' model brand new for less than the current one brand new.

Around 650-700 with 88-90%bth...

.The thing is my closest friend has one he said to me "stay away from it" go for the previous or next one, cause it overheats like crazy. I know its a well discussed topic ..

14 Pro has a battery degradation issue, wouldn't recommend it, especially already used. When I replaced the battery on my XS via an authorized service provider the replacement's battery health ran down quickly.

I see your analogy..you have a valid point ..exactly my thoughts as well.

Regarding minimizing used phone risk I'm with you ...regarding updated im sure the 14 pro will get the next 2-3 updates

In reality I dont care for the latest and greatest ...I care for a really good phone that is and feels like an upgrade from my XSmax (example dynamic island, triple camera, 120HZ) but also doesnt feel too outdated in 1,5 years

Despite the difference in price, I would say probably lean toward the 16 pro. The battery life overall is much better than that of the 14 pro (not just in everyday use, but also the life of the battery itself). A lot of people have noticed that the battery health is dropping at a much lower rate after hitting 200+ cycles. The 16 is more or less a perfected version of the 14 & 15 series. Think you'll get a much better experience over the course of 3 years or so - not to mention USB C connectivity.

I am extremely wary of the iPhone 17 at launch. This redesign has the potential to introduce problems. This is true of every new model but especially true with such an extreme redesign. It may well be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but experience has taught me to stand back and watch. No sudden moves, no direct eye contact :)

I had the 14 Pro and decided to upgrade to the 16 Pro Max, mainly because the upgrade was free through Verizon. I was itching to go back to the Pro Max size too so when the store rep waved one under my noseI said, "why not?" The 14 Pro was great - zero issues - so that would be my recommendation given the prices.

It’s a tough call with that price difference. I would lean towards the 14 Pro.

Well, actually I would lean towards the 16e (570 € street price?), but you seem to be set on a Pro.

I'll go along with the consensus on this one , the 16 pro or 16 pro max, for a different reason - iOS replacement cycle should give 3 + years of support, enough time to decide you got your investment out of it and replace it with a new model, just a feeling having an os with current security is a good idea

My 14 Pro's battery has degraded faster than any other phone I've had. It's terrible.

I've also found that OEM replacement batteries run down quicker, but it's also worth keeping in mind that the latest or current OS is generally much more demanding than the OS the phone originally came with (and what the battery was originally designed for).

I’d get the 16 Pro. Before I got the 16 Pro I thought about buying my dad’s old 14 Pro but decided the upgrades were worth it. USB C, better camera, action button, camera control, battery life, better chip, and will last longer

14 pro is already 3 years. Is the battery really official? Beware some non-Apple store likes to claim non-official parts official.

If can, can you get 15 pro brand new or almost new meaning buyer bought it, activated warranty but changed mind?

Cars are not a good analogy nowadays...

I have no issue with used phones, if bought from a reputable source (swappa, etc.), but in your case I would go with the 16e or a 14 Pro, if for no other reason that it's USB-C. Lightning is on the way out, plus the 16e will have a longer update of lifespan.

I've tried the 16e at work and it's fantastic. I would probably have bought one over my 16 Pro, given the choice.

Just (reluctantly) switched from 13mini to 16e, because I wanted to live through all the "excitement" of upcoming Apple Intelligence.
Now I find that it is such a great iPhone, depsite only one camera/lens. Long battery life, good form factor, speedy performance and still making great photos compared to the 13 lineup, also in low light conditions.
