I have the keychain access in the menu bar for the sole purpose of being able to lock the screen from time to time. I would prefer to not have to use the menu bar space for this feature, so is there any other way to access this function without the menu bar item?

I suppose you could set a corner of the screen to always sleep (System Preferences...->Desktop & Screen Saver->Screen Saver->Hot Corners) and require a password to unlock it (System Preferences...->Security->Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver).

Locking the screen doesn't put it to sleep, though. I generally only use the function when I have something downloading on my powerbook, and will be leaving it sitting while downloading. I just like to be sure that the screen stays off while I'm away.
