I know you can't pay with cash anymore at the Apple store, but what about an At&t store? I'll be a new customer

Paid cash for the iPhone 2g @ an AT&T Corp store.
Will be paying cash for the 3g* @ an AT&T Corp store when ever.

this time around, if the rumors of mandatory in store activation are true, i don't see why cash wouldn't be taken

thats what i figured, if instore activation is necessary then they're gonna have all your info anyway.

i guess i'll bring one just incase, although id rather pay cash.

I don't know anyone that even carries cash. Seriously.

id rather have cold hard cash than a piece of plastic.

I don't know what your talking about
I just used cash at the Apple store today to buy some screen protectors
I also got a brand new iPhone right on the spot because my touchscreen wasn't working
it was a totally painless 10 min process
thank you Apple for wonderful customer support!

you haven't been able to be a iphone with cash for a while now.
no one ever said anything about accessories, or anything else in the store.

and since you already had an iphone, its different, you were getting a replacement.

before they pulled them off the shelves you werent able to buy a new one with cash

oh well i read his comment as claiming the apple store won't take cash for anything which is untrue

for an iPhone, just put the cash into a checking account and write a check
not too hard

Towards the end, could only buy the original iPhone from an Apple Store using plastic. At one time, it had to be plastic with a name on it -- i.e. no generic gift certificate credit cards. Paper (either cash or check) wasn't accepted.

The purpose for requiring plastic was to try and slow down people who were buying them in bulk to unlock them. When you bought an iPhone from Apple, Apple recorded how many you bought, and enough of your credit card number to deny any further sales to that credit card once you hit a certain number of iPhone purchases on that card.

Apple has wavered back and forth about the maximum number of iPhones that could be purchased, on if the whole transaction had to be purchased on plastic, and on if you could just pay in cash for an Apple Store gift certificate and then turn around and use that to buy the iPhone.

For anything else in their store, paying in cash shouldn't be a problem.

As for the iPhone 3G, I'm sure they'll say something specifically towards what they accept as payment when they announce how they're going to do activations, etc.

I just figured out that the iPhone 3G will cost me 324.79.. plus an accessory that will jump to 359. I guess I'll give about $370 to put in my mom's account.

I thought all Apple stores didn't take cash for iPhones, looks like some do though.

So that it takes up more room, is dirty, and if you get robbed you lose it all and never get anything back? Why not just use a debit card, same as cash, but much more convenient.

The only 3 reasons I can see for using cash are (a) you're too young to have credit/debit, (b) you're too old and stubborn and still keep all your money under your mattress and not even a bank account, or (c) you have no self control. If I never get a single coin or bill again I'd be happy. I'm pissed that debit/credit vending machines haven't taken off here in the US.
