I just ordered a refurbed 2.6 GHz mbp. 200gb ata 7200. Did I read somewhere there was a problem with these? The apple guy said it was a custom order originally or either sent back or in some cases people don't take delivery so it could have never been used.

There were reports that the 8600 graphics card might fail. Apple have started an extended warranty program for notebooks with the 8600, an extra year on top of the standard year.

That's the machine I have and it kicks ass (especially with the 7200rpm drive--I don't understand why the new MBPs still come with 5400rpm drives by default). I am lucky that I got the Applecare for free, considering the GPU issue. But even if you don't, you have 2 years to complain if you sense a problem.

One thing that I do is use smcFanControl to run the fans at 3500rpm continuously, to keep the GPU nice and cool and, you know, prevent it from spontaneously bursting into flames.

Thanks. So I get the two years even though it is a refurb? The Apple sales guy said I had a warranty as if new (and then said 1 year and 90 days tech).

I'm wondering what told him this was a custom order?
