my barely year old mbp has definitely been running slower than usual over the last month or so and while I dont have any abundance of apps open at any given time, I am rather clueless as to the cause.

I tried using Onyx to clean up my computer and it worked the first time, but then it slowed right back down again and repeated attempts with onyx have not cleared up the problem.

do people ever format their macs like they do in windows when things slow down or are there other things i can try first?

thanks

I would use DiskWarrior to de-frag your directory. You could also re-install OSX if you have a Time Machine backup, which would put all the files on theiry rightful place.
