When 5 comes out I gotta pay full price since I'll be in contract and just wandering

Within your return period you can only take the phone back to the place you bought it from (ie if you buy from verizon you cannot take to Apple store to return). This only applies to the return policy. Apple still honors warranties through their Apple Stores. They will also tell you that you will be given a refurb phone if you take it in for warranty covered issues even within your return period. Since you are buying a the phone on launch, you need not worry about receiving a refurb as all "refurbs" in that time frame will be guaranteed new.

If you can buy direct from Apple, do so.

You can buy from Verizon, but you may encounter:

  • Verizon sales reps who will try to steer you to other phones because they get better commission on them.
  • Staff who might not be able to answer your questions about iOS devices, or may answer them wrong on purpose (see above).
  • Potentially a restocking fee and a shorter return period as opposed to the Apple store (no restock fee, 30 days return period).

On the other hand, some note that if you want to make changes to your plan at the same time as getting your phone, or if there's some sort of glitch with your account, the Apple store probably won't be able to help you there.

If you purchase from Verizon, at least in store, it costs 75$ if you want to return the phone.

Follow this rule of thumb for any and all Apple products:

If you can buy it from the Apple store instead of somewhere else, do so!
