For me, the dGPU isn't a must have. It's nice and I'd benefit slightly from having it. But, if this new AMD gpu is going to produce a lot of heat and lead to failure I'd just rather load up a 13" to top spec and go with that.

Does anyone with technical knowledge of these new dGPU's know whether the heat issues from the past will persist?

From Appleinsider: http://appleinsider.com/articles/16...uting-in-the-macbook-pro-detailed-benchmarked

"The discrete GPU in the MacBook Pro are based on AMD's 14nm FinFET process, and are designed for power efficiency, more than peak performance. All three units provide 80 GB per second memory bandwidth, and are based on the company's Polaris architecture."

So im guessing these chips will be cooler and not use the fans as much as the old dgpus

With a TDP of only 35W and Apple flaunting their upgraded cooling system, I wouldn't say there is anything to worry about.

Just the fact that this new MacBook Pro is smaller and thinner does not bode well for improved thermals. But it will take a few years before we find out for sure if the new GPUs will be prone to failures like previous generations.
