Any reason to preserve BB from 4.2?

I have a JB iPhone 4 running 4.2.1. It was a new phone with 4.2.1, so the BB is the stock 4.2.1 BB 03.10.01. I would like to unlock eventually, but since there isn't one for this BB, or whatever it is on 4.3.1... is there any reason to preserve the 03.10.01? Seems if there will be an unlock past 4.0's, it would be the most recent? If that's the case, just upgrading to 4.3.1 and using redsn0w makes the most sense, right?
