I put a Maxtor Maxline Pro III inside an OWC case -- the case is fanless.

The setup is pretty quiet.

another vote for a fanless (or quietly fanned) enclosure.

I also have a 500 GB mybook pro, and I also find it annoying that an external hard drive is louder than my mac pro.

I have the same drive, same bugbear. I found when i put little rubber feet on it, to lift it off the desk, it makes it a lot quieter. ie. most of the noise was vibration related. In my case i had some left over traction dots, clear rubber hemispheres with a stick back that i use on my snowboard, but any rubber feet should help.

It's pricey, but the G-Drive Q is a fanless external drive; very nice-looking...

That is True but does this drive let you put you own HD in it, or is it a closed case design? I like the G5 look, and would like to get a drive which has this 'look', but want one that i would be able to upgrade drives with in the future.

This is the one i am looking at so far: OWC Mercury™ Elite-AL Pro

With this one you can also just buy the enclosure, it is on the bottom right of the linked page.
