I have a 15" 2012 retina 2.7Ghz/16gb/512/NvidiaGt650M.

It works swimmingly for my current needs(gpu is slow though - e.g. image classification tasks on xcode, however for me those are fun projects).

Battery is @80% health now, and one of the fans makes some noise(I dropped it on a hard surface from around 2 feet).... But I'll keep it for at least 1 year, especially with the latest Catalina is my thought for now.

Heh my base original rmbp is still soldiering on.

honestly i kind of want 32gb ram but not sure i want to go for the $3800 model. The reg upspec model is probably the one i’ll replace it with eventually

I have taken the plunge and now have my new MacBook Pro 16. My trusty MBP Retina 2012 remains at my side however as I am getting ready to move away from my beloved MacBook 17. I look the beast, particularly the keyboard (it is the best ever IMHO) but it is getting left behind a lot more.

My 2012 MBP still functions fine until we get to videos...picture editing is still fine. I've upgraded in over the years, new battery, bigger SSD but cannot replace the GPU and CPU. It will likely be at my side another 4-5 years though! It's going to take a while to setup the new one, I want a clean install only on it. Starting now.

I only got 32 GB RAM....wondering if that was a mistake......got the 8GB GPU though and 2 TB SSD.

Wasn't aware we could increase RAM in the 2012 MBP Retina?

Congrats on the new machine Btw.... glad to hear the 2012 is a workhorse... :)

Yep, just did. Had a 2012 2.6/16/512. In the interim I had upgrade its wifi to 802.11ac and upgraded the SSD to a 1TB msata drive. Still ran well, but found the CPU to be somewhat lacking nowadays, and RAM was becoming an issue when running VMs.

Just bought myself a 16" 2.4/32/2TB/55008GB and so far love it. The keyboard has less travel than the old one, but typing on it feels fine.

You couldn't. He's probably talking about the non-retina model.

saw some youtube video which said 4k videos need more ram. How much more not sure..

Great specs!

I tried the 2018+2019 keyboards in store a few times, even I as a person who is NOT bothered much about keyboards was not thrilled about the lack of travel in those.

16" keyboards supposedly are an improvement, so will check them out in store.

Some parts are replaced after a beer-spilling accident (wasn't me) and the HD was wiped and Catalina installed after it stopped recognising the harddisk... It runs really smoothly and operates like new right now, even with Catalina. But they advised me that it would be getting more issues and i should look for a new one. Also i needed a bit more speed for After Effects, Logic Pro X (many layers) and some heavy layered Photoshop files. The machine certainly served me well. I will keep using it next to my new 16 inch when i receive it. Can't wait.

So, from a
mid 2012 15 inch
2.6 GHz quadcore i7
16GB of RAM (1600-MHz DDR3)
500GB SSD
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M (1GB VRAM)

to a

2019 16 inch
2.3 8 core i9
32GB RAM (2666‑MHz DDR4)
1TB SSD
AMD Radeon Pro 5500M met 8 GB GDDR6

Any thoughts on the speed difference?

That's pretty similar to what I have and am planning to move to. Looks like the CPU is just under 3x faster if you have heavily multi-threaded work, the GPU should be a bit more than 5x faster, the SSD should be 8x faster. It'll be a good upgrade.

Sorry, you are right, upgraded the older one I traded in.

Yes.

Have a 2012 2.6GHz i7 / 16GB / 512GB, which I still use. Ordered 2.3GHz i9 / 32GB / 1TB / 5500M on Thursday.

The 2012 rMBP has been a great machine, but the discrete GPU failed earlier this year, so I have had to apply the "fix" to disable it, which means that the machine will no longer sleep, which is a pain. And it's probably unreasonable to expect it to last forever.

More importantly, I do quite a bit of programming with OpenCL, so a new machine with a tolerably decent GPU is an attractive proposition. I wondered about the new Mac Pro, but have decided instead on the 16" plus an eGPU, on the basis that:
  • the 5500M in the 16" is not too far off the Radeon Pro 580X in the new Mac Pro base model;
  • the RX Vega 56 in the Blackmagic eGPU is not a million miles off the Pro Vega II (the upgrade option in the Pro); and
  • the combined cost of the 16" and eGPU is around two thirds of the Pro base model (without the Pro Vega II, which is hardly likely to be a free upgrade ....).

Let’s say I‘m strongly considering moving from my trusty 2012 rMBP (2.6GHz, 16GB RAM, ~500GB SSD) to probably a base 16“, maybe with a 1TB SSD.

Should make for a nice upgrade, if I can stay away from the various hardware-fetishizing «you-have-to-max-out-everything-or-it‘ll-be-obsolete-in-two-weeks» threads around here.

Haha... I wish(rather hope) to do the same....

I have a 2014 and a 2015 and split my work between the two because it won't all run on just one. So a 2019 is attractive. But I don't need one. I want one though.

So I had the 2015 rMBP 15" and I thought it did its job well. I also briefly had the mid 2019 15" MBP, I returned it to wait for the 16."

With that being said, I am pretty particular about my keyboard, I use a HHKB profesional 2 as my daily driver when I am at my desk, and I thought the wobble was not the greatest on the rMBP. On the mid 2019 15" MBP you could type fast as hell but the travel was crap and extended use was not great, also the reliability issues. The new keyboard, I tested it out at a local Apple Store, is great. I would say it is better in some ways and worse in others compared to the rMBP. (wobble vs key travel) It is a good compromise, a balance that is just right for portable use on the go.

All in all it is a nice keyboard for sure and I am excited to receive my BTO model later this month.

I do still wish the 16" keyboard had a touch more travel.

I know it's a small amount, but I find the existing desktop Magic Keyboard to be my comfortable minimum on travel (and the 16 is a bit less than that even) - and even with the MKB I prefer more travel.

On my desktop I use a wired TKL Apple Keyboard from 2012-ish era.

My 2012 machine has already been replaced, and as such, I don't see any reason to buy the 2019 MBP. Its a fine machine but my needs and budget are such that I'll not be looking to buy it

YAY! I was about to start such a thread!!!!

Jumping from the 2,6 16GB i7 to 2,3 i9, 64GB, 1Tb, 5500. I love 2012 till this day, a second water spill now killed it :( what are you guys's thoughts in terms of performance difference? It seems there isn't any comparison of ours to the 16" or 15,4 2018 or 19 models....

My guess: I won’t notice much difference in day-to-day work, with the exception of h265 encoding. I don’t play games anymore, and stopped making 3D animation ages ago, so the GPU will probably not get much work.

(Actually, having had a quick first look at the 16“ yesterday, I’m even thinking about getting a 13“ and a 4k or 5k monitor. Not that the 16“ isn’t really nice, but I suddenly remembered how heavy the 2012 rMBP is while doing bike tours in the summer 😎)
