after this live demo of the yellowsn0w carrier unlock working on official 3.0 firmware later tonight, its clear that the phones can get more than normal when sold on ebay.
so that is currently my plan to finance the upgrade to 3g s.
but is there any risk? i will unregister my device id (from adc), but won't my imei be in at&ts database somewhere? could they potentially find out about the fact that i unlocked and resold it?
is it illegal?

The only risk with unlocking is not being able to do it right, and having to sell it as a cheaper still-locked model. People like unlocked phones.
