Hi

Please pardon if this is a well discussed question. I tried looking but didn't find anything so please direct me to where I can get some answers. Thanks.

The question: I have a iPhone 3G 2.1 and iTunes 8 on a mac. I've downloaded both Pwnage Tool and QuickPwn from the dev team. But I have no clue what to do next? Could anyone guide me to the steps to jailbreak my iPhone 3G on a mac. I've never done this before.

Much appreciated. Thanks.

Very easy, you only need PwngTool. Throw quickpwn in the trash. Don't read this all at once, you'll get confused. Follow the instructions exactly as posted, step by step with your software open. Best part is, you can't ruin your phone, cause there is no unlock being done.

1) Start it Pwnage Tool.
2) Click Expert Mode (found top-right with logo of Einstein's face)
3) Click Iphone 3g
4) click blue arrow on bottom
5) Wait for the search
6) Click iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136
7) Click blue arrow on bttom
8) click General
9) uncheck 'activate the phone'
10) press the grey "back" button found next to the blue arrow you've been clickin so far
11) click custom logos
12) uncheck both custom image options
13) press the grey "back" button found next to the blue arrow you've been clicking so far
14) click build
15) click the blue arrow on the bottom
16) save the file it asks to your desktop
17) wait about 10 minutes or so for it to make the file
18) follow visual instructions to turn off phone and start it in the special mode
19) when finished, close pwnage tool and start itunes if it hasn't started up on its own
20) it will ask you to recover your phone with dialogue box, click ok
21) option+click restore, and it will ask you to find a file, select the file on your desktop (the one we made earlier).
22) give itunes about 10 minutes to restore your phone.
23) you're done!

Thanks a lot!! Its really surprising I couldn't find any guide for mac users. I guess I'm late into this jailbreaking game.

I'm just wondering if I should go ahead with the jailbreak or wait until I get the data settings from my carrier to activate my data plan. I'll need to take my phone to the store to get the settings and don't want to risk losing my warranty if they know its jailbroken.

uh. do you not have at&t?

just fyi there are two different terms: unlock and jailbreak. Jailbreak just allows for 3rd party software to be installed. unlock changes your signal software to allow for other service providers. the iphone 3g can not be unlocked as of yet.

basically, if you don't have att, you cant use ur 3g for a phone, or even activate it for that matter.

edit: i assumed you were from the u.s., you might not be. if you are not, I dont know how overseas services work, and i cant be of much help then.

mrrish:

Thanks for the great post from another newb here with this stuff! It is greatly appreciated.

However, if I want to unlock my iPhone (1st gen) as well, I run the QuickPwn first, before PwnageTool? I am running Leopard with iTunes 8 and my phone is updated to 2.1.

Is the QuickPwn as straight forward and easy to run as the PwnageTool? I have searched up and down through the many posts on here about this and feel lost like peanut48, actually somewhat intimidated as well as I don't want to brick my phone.

I want to unlock it to use it on a different carriers network and am looking for some step by step guidance on how to do this.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

i've never run QuickPwn before, as I have a legitimate contract with AT&T. I recommend looking for YouTube videos or doing a general websearch for instructions on how to unlock your first-gen phone. From what I've seen, i do believe PwngeTool CAN unlock first-gen phones, but I am not sure.

Woohoo...I jailbreaked my iPhone successfully!! :D Thanks a lot!!

Now I don't know how to go about installing the apps or downloading them..I've heard about Cydia, Installer, Open SSH, Boss Prefs, Winterboard..I assume these are the most needed apps in a jailbroken phone...

Could someone please direct me on what to do next and how to get the above apps...Thanks a lot...I've got Cydia and Installer on my iPhone.
