Hey! I was just wondering if any pre-gigahertz Tibook owners have upgraded to a superdrive from MCE Tech. The estimated shipping date for their drives was 2/25. At $500, they're kinda steep, but i am considering one since I want a superdrive. From the specs, it looks faster than the Ti superdrives shipped from apple.

Since I have a superdrive in another Mac, I don't feel the need for one in the TiBook.

Also, why I should I spend $500 to upgrade the optical drive when I'm probably going to have a strong urge in about a year to replace the PowerBook.

I haven't done SuperDrive upgrade, but it sounds like decent deal because they promise x2 burning speed instead of x1 which comes with all PowerBooks. I know this tech person who is considering buying 667Mhz G4 PowerBook for less than $2000 and upgrading it with MCE SuperDrive, because it would be cheaper than other 15" PowerBook with SuperDrive and he doesn't like 12" PowerBook display.

you shouldn't ;)

macphoria, actually, MCE updated their site and info on the superdrive upgrade. It doesn't look too appealing any more. It's only 1x dvd-r/rw 16x cd-r/rw now. Expected shipping date is now March 27.

Hey chibianh

If that's the case, you are right, it doesn't sound appealing anymore. x2 burning was a big incentive. But still, guys with older PowerBooks who want SuperDrive might disagree. I'll relay the message to my buddy and see what he thinks of it. Thanks for the info.

I thought about it, instead I got toast Titanium and can burn video CDs if I feel the need. My Tibook belongs to my employer, so I don't want to spend my money on their computer, instead I will wait until they refresh my computer in the next 18 months.

I wonder if they will have built-in dual lcd screens by then? he he

Saw a DVD upgrade in Tokyo

Working out in Tokyo at the moment, was browsing an apple specialist store down in Akihabara (The electronic city) as its known to tourist. :D I saw a super drive after market upgrade for a reasonable price think its around 300 USD? Not 100% will look in to it in a few weeks time when I get the chance. But the brand is some what obscure. TAXAN, thought they just made Monitors. Didnt know they made slot loading drives. Didnt pay that much of attention to it cause I just bought my 1Ghz baby w/ superdrive back in Dec.:D.
