I ordered a refurb current gen Time Capsule 2TB that should be delivered this week. I was searching online to see if there was any sort of hacking/tweaking community out there for them to see if there's more that can be squeezed out of them than just Time Machine backups.

I'm thinking not since there is no dedicated site/forum I can find on the topic but wanted to see if anyone had anything to share with me that I've otherwise missed.

Thanks!

I've been thinking about in the near future replacing my Airport Extreme to get a Time Capsule but the lack of any extra features on top of just doing backups has made me a bit hesitant considering the price. I tried searching online and couldn't find anything as far as tweaks go. Hoping they update the hardware soon and maybe drop the price or add features.

What exactly are you looking to get out of it?

You mention using it as more than just for Time Machine backups. As it is, it can be used for more than Time Machine without tweaking.

You can use it as a NAS and store files on it directly from Finder. Speeds may not be as great as a standalone NAS, and it lacks other NAS functionality such as FTP or iTunes Server functionality, but it does work to store non-TM data. Do keep in mind that any data stored on the Time Capsule is not included in Time Machine backups of your Mac.

I believe it's also possible to access files on your Time Capsule from outside of your network. It may require Back to My Mac, though I think others have got it to work without this. I can't comment on this functionality as I haven't set it up myself.

Would love to be able to access movies/TV shows from the Time Machine on the Apple TV. Guessing only a Jailbroken device would be able to do that, shame Apple closed the little hockey puck so much.

Could see this being pretty useful.
