any video screen capture applications out there?

hey does anyone know of any apps out there that are capable of recording the screen's displayed image? I understand there may be some legal issues with this kind of app... what with sites like youtube letting you watch almost anything via streaming... that's not my intention though. I just need to make short video tutorials on a computer application.
if anyone knows of anything, please let me know
