I know Apple gives you the option to save the encryption key when turning on FIlevault2 for the boot volume, but when you encrypt an external drive using disk utility, is there a way to backup the key?

Or is the password the only way to get at the data?

Also, there's some info that the XTS-AES-128 encryption used by filevault2 is better than aes-256? Opinions?
