My phone's background is pretty light up to the top, and it's pretty impossible to read the time, battery percentage, and all that now that the upper bar has been removed.

Is there a way I can turn it black, like it appears in apps with white backgrounds? Because this, along with a bunch of little changes that really screw things up visually are becoming really annoying.

no. the color will change from either white or black depending on your background color. the color you have now may be just below its threshold to change to black. if you cant read it or dont like it, change your wallpaper.
