Is there a way to speak into a microphone and have the text appear on screen? I have a hand written diary i have to put into the computer....and it's very long.

I believe IBM ViaVoice will do just exactly what your asking for and much more! Look on the places that resell Macs and you'll probably find it.
 
Dragon NaturallySpeaking works better than IBM ViaVoice due to better AI and trainer.

Note: No matter the program, you'll have to train it for hours before it recognizes your voice and accent efficiently. So don't expect to have 100% voice recognition right out of the box.

But the hours will melt away with the oodles of hillarious misstypes these programs make at first.
