Any way to get the date displayed next to time?

At the top of the iphone, where it shows the current time, is there a way to display the date there as well?

If you're jailbroken and have SBSettings installed, yes.
In SBSetting click more, go to SBSettings Options, you will see an option there to turn on Statusbar date.
