Any way to improve wifi range?

My friends macbook (3ft away from my imac) connects perfectly fine to a public wifi. I've tried moving it over there before, but still got no connection.
Anything I can do?

If you are at home, I suggest a TP-Link home plug which enables you to set up a wired connection through your wall socket.
