I signed out of iCloud on my MacBook in an attempt to fix some problems I had with Catalina (it didn't work).

The issue is that now I have signed back in iCloud is re-downloading all my documents and desktop which is totally swamping my internet connection so I cannot get any other work done. So far it's been several days and will be several more because I'm currently on a slow connection. I would have thought it would have some priority built in, everything else does.

Is there any way to limit iCloud bandwidth so I can get on and use my MacBook for stuff that is time critical?

I found a workaround, so I'm posting back for the benefit of anyone else. I couldn't for the life of me stop the iCloud sync swamping my terrible internet connection, which is incredibly stupid because it should prioritise my traffic.

Anyway... what you have to do is wait until at least one file in a folder downloads, then right click the folder and select 'Remove Download'. It will do as it says, remove all the downloads in that folder but it won't start up the sync again automatically until you manually right click and select 'Download Now'. So you can then choose when to download the files at a time to suit you.
