Any way to look into the contents of a backup?

I do not have my iPhone anymore and I found out there is an important text message saved in the backup. Is there anyway I can view the text? If not, I guess I could wait the 8 days for the iPhone 3G, assuming it will allow you to restore the first gen iPhone's backup.
