Any way to lower brightness beyond Apple's range?

At night, the iPads lowest brightness setting tears up my eyes... However some apps such as Night Owl and iBooks lower the brightness beyond what's available in Settings. Is there any way to do this system-wide?

No, it is not currently possible, not even through the brightness widget in SBSettings on a jailbroken iPad.

However, have you noticed that the min brightness setting has been decreased in 4.2? Use the slider in the multi-tasking bar.

If you jailbreak your iPad, there's a mod, which I think is called something like "Dimmer," that lets you turn down the brightness lower than official levels.
