I use my mac mini as a HTPC, so I have an 8 bay external from it. Often it goes to sleep, and I wake it to do something that doesn't require the media on the external. Of course it wakes up the drives upon waking from sleep which just seems unnecessary. Any way to make it so that it only wakes up drives when I'm accessing files from the drives?

I would find this useful, if anyone knows how - and also, the opposite, to be able to keep certain external HDDs alive but let others sleep.

For example, I'd like to be able to keep my Photoshop scratch disk running but let my backup drive sleep (I know I can just eject the backup disk, but then I have to remember to reconnect...)
