It's there because the bar is an address/URL bar (in addition to being a search bar) and the '.' is used a lot in URLs. Now, they could have probably found a better placement for it on the keyboard maybe, but that's essentially the reason why it's there in that context.
I hit the damn . More than anything, my searches.end.up.looking.like.this.
I agree its dumb because its also near the space bar so when I'm trying to type fast I also hit the . all the time intend of the space bar. Its in a terrible place.
I dont see why someone needs it, most websites only need like one period anyways. There should at least be an option to put the google bar back.

The search bar is now incorporated into the URL Bar for simplicity.
A lot of browsers do this now.

They simply encorporated the search into the address bar, as many browsers do now. The search functionality is still there and can be set to use Google or another provider.Getting rid of the old Google bar?
