I have a 1st gen Airport Express sitting around that I want to hook up to my table radio for AirPlay only. Current version of Airport Utility doesn't work with this model and older versions of Airport Utility won't install on any of my Macs.

Is there any work around here or is this Airport Express officially a paper weight?

Well you don't really need the AirPort utility for more than the first time setup, do you? Get VirtualBox, install an old OS X and set it up through that

If you have access to a Windows computer, the last version of the Airport utility will still work to configure the 1st gen airport express.

Another option is to download and install this:

Yeah, I found the Zyniker utility after I posted. Worked great on my Mac with High Sierra. Had to do the initial setup connected to Ethernet but working great now as an Airplay receiver. Shame Apple obsoletes perfect good hardware like this -- or at least forces people to do work arounds like this.
