I got an iphone 3GS, running 4.1 and want to upgrade to 4.2.1 software. I only got shsh for ios 5.0.1 and 4.1, but nothing else. Any way to go to 4.2.1?

No. Not unless he has the correct shsh blob saved.
Doesn't cydia automatically save your blobs? I never saved any manually on my old 3GS and all past shsh blobs (3.1.2 - 5.0.1) as saved on Cydia.
Only if you selected the make it easy option in Cydia. I always found it best to let cydia save it as well as manually saving via tinyumbrella.
Mine is already unlocked with ipad bb and on 4.1 but new bootrom iPhone 3GS prolly cant unlock on 5.0.1 I read that somewhere
It depends what week the 3GS was made.
The ipad bb worked for the old and new bootrom models but the latest 8GB 3GS models released have a patched baseband that wont accept the ipad bb installation.
You can find out what week your 3GS was made by its serial number.
How does Apple prevent people from unlocking their brand new iPhone 3GS 8GB? They replaced one of the components inside! As it turns out any 3GS produced after week 28 of year 2011 (sometime in July) is made with Toshiba baseband chip, as opposed to Infineon baseband chip.
If you attempt to flash it using iPad baseband 6.15.00 there is a risk of bricking your phone! Take this as a warning!
The typical symptoms of a corrupted baseband chip are:
•No WiFi
•No ECID
•No IMEI
•No Bluetooth
Please take note of serial number of up to XXX109XXX may NOT be compatible with the iPad baseband. See example below:
XX109XX = 1 is the year of 2011 and 09 is week 9 of 1 year
If the serial number is XX931XXX that means it was produced in 2009 in week 31. Thus, it’s safe to flash it with the iPad baseband. If you’re already encounted with the errors above, consider having your logic board fixed.
You can use this website to check your iPhone’s production year and week based on its serial number.

Looks like its compatible and you can install the ipad bb.
If you install the ipad bb to unlock you will lose your GPS function and you will not be able to restore or update to stock firmware with itunes.
