WatchOS 3 introduced the "dock" and allowed us to configure up to 10 apps to always be running. In addition to those apps, Apple Watch would keep one more app running (your most recent).

WatchOS 4 no longer lets us decide which 10 apps you always want running and instead ALWAYS just keeps your most recent apps running.

This really sucks. Under WatchOS 3, my Dark Sky complication would always show the current temperature because Dark Sky was always running in the background. Under WatchOS 4, the Dark Sky complication is a nothing more than a shortcut to launch Dark Sky so I can force it to get the latest temperature. What is worse is that I don't get the nice warnings when it is about to rain.

To make matters worse, the other apps I liked running for quick access (like my calorie tracker and messages) never seem to be in the most recent apps running anymore. Why??? Because every time I get a stupid notification and click on it the app that owns the notification pushes something off the end of the queue and takes its place in the list of currently running background apps.

I want the WatchOS dock to work the way it did in WatchOS 3. I want to be able to pin specific apps to always be running. This new way of doing things is really slowing down my workflow with Apple Watch -- because, let's face it, Apple Watch takes an eternity to launch an app that is not already in memory.

You can configure your dock in the iPhone watch app. It can be toggled between most recent or preset apps.

Thank you. Just found this. Life saver. Was hating how slow my watch was to open messages.

I found out I don't use the dock as much as I did in the past, but I don't think watchOS 4 has something to do with it. Using a watch face with many complications allow me to quickly open the apps I need throughout the day and that's it
