I just picked up my new MBP and I notice the screen will dim a little and then it goes back to normal. I will be typing on AIm or just browsing the web...
 
It's the ambient light sensor. It's to the left of the iSight cam. Since you're sitting in front of your Macbook your head can block the sensor from reading the correct light and will adjust the screen brightness accordingly.
