...But how/why is spotlight gray?

You can choose a different colour for these items (among others) in the System preferences, under the Appearance section. I have no idea why the Apple menu is blue and the Spotlight icon is graphite though...

One good photoshop job? :p

...Otherwise I'm stumped on how that could happen.

Pretty simple to change that the same way you add color to your battery icon on portables or Bluetooth, or change the background of the clock....just edit the xxxx.menu item.

Show contents for it, find the .tiff or whatever image file, and alter the color of it. I would recommend saving the original, but you can alter most all of that pretty easy....

actually safari crashed and reset the color to itself

so it was showing the default aqua or whatever its called and my finder was showing the gray color

when i selected safari the apple/highligh/scroll bar/ ect was that neat little blue with the red yellow green buttons

but when i selected anything besides safari the apple turned gray and so did everything else

it crashed 3 times in a row... so i was a little messed up

but its good now:)

What did it take to fix Safari?

A miracle? :D

Just kidding. I have found it a bit sluggish compared to Firefox 1.5 though...hate to say it. My iBook seems to have a tough time running more than 10 tabs whereas on Firefox it does fine.

no that is incorrect the apple icon is not always blue, mine is black :apple: <---
like that apple icon there and my spotlight icon is also black

it could just be the version of the computer ie. 10.x.x .... mine is 10.6.3
