Hey all,

Not sure if this has been discussed much, it didn't come up in my search. I'm wondering if any of you switched to iPhone (specifically 15 Pro) from a Google Pixel and what your experience was like. Especially if you came from a later model Pixel (Pixel 6 or newer).

I've been a long time Pixel user and have really enjoyed them up until my Pixel 8 which has been super buggy and I get the green screen of death daily. I have a lot of travel coming up over the next few months and I need a reliable phone. I'm considering buying a 15 pro. I know the 16 is coming out in a few months but I need a reliable phone ASAP.

For those that have made the switch, what did you miss the most about your Pixel? I've used iPhones before, in fact I even had a 14 Pro for a bit as a second phone. But I've never had one as my daily driver.

Any input is appreciated.

I came from the Pixel 3a XL, back in 2021 though. But that's not really useful to you because it wasn't a modern Pixel and quite frankly that Pixel was a 9 month test. I've used iPhone since 2012 and that 9 months from mid 2020 to early 2021 was to see if Android had improved any.

When I came back, it was to the iPhone 11 Pro Max (which is still my current iPhone). I do still have my Pixel though (as well as all my older iPhones).

You'll get a reliable phone with any current/modern iPhone. The way Apple does things is a bit different, but it comes down to about the same. Your biggest realization will be that Google apps on iOS are better than on Android.

Wrap your head around that. ;)

Good to hear. I think if iOS was still how it was 5 years ago it would have been a lot harder for me to switch. No AOD or widgets would have been tough to swallow. I think it's a lot easier to switch nowadays with Google apps on iOS etc.

iOS 18, which launches probably sometime in September (like most iOS launches) will allow you to put icons on the springboard anywhere you like. Something jailbreakers have been doing since before 2011 and Apple finally got around to allowing.

So, in a few short months you should feel right at home.

PS. Apple had widgets with iOS 6. They just chose to drop them until a few years ago.

I have had every single Pixel phone except Pixel 8. I usually wait until used Pixel phone gets cheap enough to buy one. This is why I usually carry iPhone around half year and Pixel second half year (or both at same time).

I mean to me, it is just a smartphone. I don’t have anything that are exclusive. I avoid to use iCloud and sync all my data with Google. So I can switch between iPhone and Pixel without any issues.

I like to use Android with its customization and widgets support. Pixel also produces better photo in my opinion. It is also easier for me to get photo out of Pixel than iPhone. I have program setup, when new photos added to a specific folder on my PC, it will sync to my Pixel 1, which has unlimited original quality uploads.

There are some apps that from China which aren’t available on Google Play Store. So I just ended up with Xiaomi App Store on my Pixel phone. Whereas on iOS, I have to create a Chinese AppleID and switch AppleID when I need. I think it is more cumbersome on iOS. This is also why I think third party App Store on iOS should be allowed.

Isn't it possible to have the Pixel 8 replaced under warranty? Sounds like a hardware issue. I assume what your device is doing isn't normal as most Pixel users speak highly of the performance (especially the newer models).

Yes it's under warranty but the issue is:
1. Google sometimes won't replace it if they can't replicate an intermittent problem
2. Many customers who've had their phones replaced end up having the same problem all over again with the new unit.

I'm not sure I can take a chance with that outside of the country.

Maybe next time, when the issue occurs again, take a video as proof?

It maybe related with software, have you tired to reset the phone?

Biggest thing I still miss is Google’s call screening. Overall though, I’m glad I made the switch. It was a rough transition period getting accustomed to iOS, but it sounds like that won’t be much of an issue for you.

I had a Pixel 8 for a while. I have now had a 15 pro for 6 months. Both great phones, but I prefer the 15 pro.
I enjoyed playing around with the photo editing features on the pixel 8, but honestly, I don’t miss them. And many of them I can use anyway in the Google Photos app for iOS.
I like the pixel stock android launcher experience slightly better than the iOS Home Screen experience, but I can live with iOS and it’s about to get better with 18.
Also my family are all Apple users so the 15 pro integrates better with them.
Good luck with your decision.

I am still using Google Pixel 7. There are three things I can't give up:

1. RCS messaging. Two of my direct supervisors are using Pixel as well and I don't use anything other than WhatsApp and WeChat. So I am messaging the with RCS.

2. Google Call Screen: This tells me where the calls are from and if it is likely scam call. It also helps me when I am on hold.

3. Live Translation: This is extremely helpful when I am watching videos in foreign language (other than Chinese).

4. English Transcript on voice recorder app. This is extremely important, if I am in a meeting and need to get all the details.

I just watched a video about upcoming features in iOS 18 and a lot of them would make switching to iPhone from Pixel even easier. More customizable home screen, magic eraser type tool in the photos app etc.

RCS is thankfully coming to iOS soon. But I doubt it'll be as good as RCS between Android at the moment but it's progress.

I will miss call screen for sure.

I haven't used live translation much, but it is a cool feature for sure.

Not sure how true this is but I hear Apple maps works in China while Google maps doesn't? I'll be in China in September so having a phone with working maps app will be a bonus for sure.
