I currently have a 1st gen and most likely going to purchase a 3rd gen because i've heard its a massive upgrade, has anybody done this already? Is the difference worth it? What improvements are there in particular?

i haven't done this personally, but the main improvements will be the screen (if not yellow:D) and the gpu performance.

almost everything since iPad 1 has been upgraded.

I upgraded. The difference is pretty amazing. Gone is all the lag, Safari crashing, and memory errors. The 1 gb of ram makes a huge difference, the screen is crisp, and I think the upgrade is totally worth it... JMO though. :)

I am going to do this, just not sure when. My main reason to upgrade is to be able to run iPhoto on my iPad. I found a way to install iPhoto on my iPad 1 but it crashes a lot. I see myself using this program a lot in the future mainly to share Photo Stream pictures with others using the iCloud Journal feature.

I'm on my new iPad now, upgraded from the first. I held out waiting for a Retina display, and I'm happy I did because the quad core graphics and 1GB of RAM means I don't think I could make this thing stutter. It plays back 1080p video!
