Anybody want to walk me through GIMP?

Ive been looking for some photo editing software that is cheaper and puts less demmand on the hardware. So I download GIMP cant beat the price from downloads.com I unzip the file and find alot of STUFFF just random files and things that I cant understand. No install no applications nothing that I actually understand. So I go to the website and find where I can get the current version but instead of finding a nice download I get connected to a server filled with half a gig of files. I have know idea what to do anybody wanna walk me through it links to downloads and stuff would be appreciated.

I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard good things about GimpShop.
