I was thinking it might be cheaper to cancel my contract ($175, minus $5 per month I have been under contract) rather than buying an early upgraded iphone at the higher price. I am not due for an upgrade till Feb, 2011. Has anyone gone through this process and does it actually work and not a hassle? I am currently part of a family plan.

You'll have to wait 90 days to start a new contract if you do that. You will also lose your number.

The better option is to add a line. Then swap the phone to your original #. After 30 days cancel the added line and pay the ETF.

If your name isn't tied to the family plan account then I don't see why you couldn't do this. Whoever's name is on the account would have to pay the ETF. You can pay that person back. Assuming you are of age, you could go open your own account after that.
