I was cleaning my spa and my 17PM slipped and fell to the bottom and it was down there for about 20 seconds or so. Makes me sick given it's a new phone. People today when I was on the phone said they couldn't hear me, which is odd, as I through these were water resistant? Wondering if I should find a good waterproof case for it? If they still exist?

i feel bad for you.
you might want to try to put the phone in a cloth bag (or even a sock), and then put the the phone (while it is in the bag) into a container of white uncooked rice. this will draw the moisture out of the phone. might take a few days or a week if you leave it in just during the night. this has worked before.
a more modern method might use some packaged desiccant that comes in small plastic bags. but i have never actually heard of that working.

but, the thing is, if there really is some moisture present inside, then the moisture detection mechanism inside the phone is certainly going to remain showing that the phone was subjected to moisture "damage". this has happened to me (probably using my phone during a rain storm), and the times after that i brought that phone in for service of any kind, apple always commented on the "fact" that i allowed moisture to get into my phone, and it always seemed to require a more thorough inspection for them to agree to do whatever the needed repair was.
so even if you can use it; even if the problem seems to go away; i think if you are near an apple store, it would be good to bring it in and confirm if the moisture mechanism shows that moisture did seep in. and then go from there with apple to determine your options.

I used to wash my iPhone 8, fully submerged in the sink, with hand gel, for many years with no issues. The phone is still being used today and I have never had any problems. I’d keep the phone dry for 24 hours and see how it performs, I am sure everything will be fine!
