First, I realize, that CDs and DVDs (much like other older storage options) are either out or on their way out.
However I still burn CDs and DVDs and install software with the drive. I do want the new 27" iMac but yearn for a CD drive. Looks like my options are to buy an external drive (if still available) or keep my current (27") iMac just to burn CDs.

Any thoughts?

Yep an external drive is the answer they are cheap and easily available on amazon any make will do but don't buy the old apple superdrive they are expensive slow and pretty awful all round. You could even go with a blu ray drive then if you like.

It actually hurts me that my brand new 2015 keyboard will have one of these buttons on it. I really wish I could get rid of it.

Sounds like a great idea. I wasn't crazy about using another port (not sure how many are on the new iMac) for an external device but it seems like a viable solution. Thanks!

I have a media computer for loading Ripping Blu Rays and CD's into my media library. That's the only one that needs an optical drive. I download all my software and put OS installers on USB flash drives. Long ago I ripped all my old DVD and CD based games to ISO. So I could quickly install them on my old gaming computer. After getting Steam I have such a huge back log of new games due to all their nefarious sales and so little free time due to work that I may never play those old games again.
