With my XS, portrait photos were so zoomed in that I could basically just see the face. After switching to the 11, portrait photos are less zoomed in, so I can see more of the scene. I have a kid and want to see which toy they play with or where they are, not just a large face.

Can someone explain this to me? I assume it’s the different cameras the phones have. Is 11 Pro better than XS in this regard? Will the 12 Pro be better in this regard based on current rumors?

Professional photographers generally use 85-105 mm lenses for portraits because wide angle lenses give a distorted view of human faces, unless at far distances. So the 11 pro « telephoto » would be a better choice being a 52 mm equivalent compare to the wide angle 26 mm of the 11 non pro. The 12 pro 3X (78 mm equivalen) would be better still. 78 mm would also give a more professional boke...

The 11 uses wider cameras for portrait to simulate the effect but in more old fashioned photography approaches you’d use a 50mm or longer focal length for a portrait. The more expensive phones have such a longer lens while the cheaper ones take the wider angle lens.

The very nature of a portrait is to show in most cases just the face. Even before photography was invented in paintings.

If you want to see where your kids are why don’t u use the wide angle lens?
But this type of picture is not called portrait. Just a different style, not better or worse

I use the term “portrait“ because that’s what Apple is using. Basically, all I want is the bokeh effect. With the 11, I love that I can get the bokeh effect and get more than just a face. Do you know if the 11 Pro also have this capability?

No. Afaik the pro uses just the tele for portrait. So x, xs and pro should be the same

Yes I have had all of those devices and this statement is true. The real portrait is actually the close up shot rather than the one you’re trying to achieve OP.

Ok thanks. When I buy the iPhone 12, I guess I'll have to stick with the dual camera version :/
