I just noticed that when viewed at a wide angle, you can see alternating increases in brightness and darkness running along the right edge of the Retina display on my M1 MacBook Pro for about a quarter of the way down from the top. This is completely undetectable when viewing the display head on or from any other vantage except from the side at fairly large angle. It also requires a light colored background being displayed to be obvious. I don't see it when displaying a pure black image even at full brightness for example, and one would probably not notice it when displaying a darker image unless they were actively looking for it.

I've attached a photo to better illustrate what I'm describing. I did increase the contrast in the first image a bit to try and and depict how it actually looks, as the camera has a bit of difficulty capturing the issue clearly. In the second image I really upped the contrast to make it even more obvious in case some have trouble seeing it in the first pic.

Has anyone else noticed this?

To my knowledge though the backlight LEDs are only located along the bottom of the display, so it would be impossible to get the stage light effect on the side?

Literally every example of the stage light effect found by Googling the issue has it occurring along the bottom of the display.

Agreed on Stagelight likely not being the culprit. That said I do not have this issue on my MBP M1. I tried on a white screen at 50 and 100% brightness at extreme angles.

That’s why they are transitioning to MiniLED

Mine had the same issue. Thankfully it was the 3rd Major Warranty issue No AppleCare, and Under Florida Lemon Laws they offered me a New M1 MacBook Pro which I almost accepted. Or a FuLL Refund which I thankfully took a Full refund of $1,699 PLUS tax because it was the 16GB Model. And thank God I took that option last month. Now $1699 Plus my $1,400 Stimulus should be enough for the new 14” Min-LED M1X MacBook Pro.
